Everett "Leo" Scantlin, age 85, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, May 21, 2012, at Greenfield Assisted Living in Oak Ridge.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1926, in Ashley Creek, Mo., to parents William Bert and Mary Jane "Mollie" Brimm Scantlin, both now deceased. Mr. Scantlin served in the U.S. Navy from October 1943 to November 1944, in the Asiatic Pacific. He was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church. A government employee since 1943, Leo was one of 157 who worked under the AEC from its inception. Under OSTI, Leo became chief of the Printing Section. He retired after 40 years but he continued to work as a consultant. His hobbies included horseback riding, bronco rodeo, and neighborhood yard maintenance.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Scantlin was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Beatrice "Shorty" Scantlin, in 2008; son, "Hoppy" in 1970; brother, Archie Eldo Scantlin; sister, Lillie Beulah Hubbs; and an infant brother and sister. Survivors include his nephew, Donald Lee (Marlene) Hubbs of Houston, Mo.; sister-in-law, Beverly Scantlin; "adopted" families, Terry and Brenda Brewer, Sean, Jennifer, Evan and Abigail Brewer, Ed and Pat Valentine, Trey and Sydney Valentine, Steve and Debbie McCracken, Brook, McCracken McCoy, Sarah McCracken, Beverly and Gary Sawyer, Kevin and Chris Sawyer, Steve and Pam Abernathy, Taylor and Andrew Abernathy, Donna and Kenton Young, Justin and Joshua Young, Mike, Michelle, Cori, and Taylor Ramsey, Barbara Spangler Burns, Rich Burns; sister-in-law, Billie (Jack) Kerrigan; and special friends and neighbors, J.C. and Ruby Shanks.
The family wishes to express profound gratitude to caregivers at Greenfield Assisted Living. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home, with the funeral to follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Walton officiating. The graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Clinton.
